I’m a member of the Independent Digital Ethics Panel for Policing, which helps Law Enforcement – that’s the Home Office, the police constabularies, and other law enforcement folks like the National Crime Agency and HMRC – work through some of the difficult issues associated with using modern technology when investigating, preventing, and disrupting crime.
Recent pieces of our work have included advice on the use of Big Data, on-line undercover work, and the privacy impact assessments of the new Law Enforcement Data Service which will take over from the Police National Computer (PNC) and Police National Database (PND).
It’s fascinating as a technologist and engineer, getting to work with ethicists, lawyers, and privacy experts.
Although it took us quite a while to get some momentum going, we’ve been generating some useful work, which is already being used to help law enforcement folks make better decisions around these difficult issues.
